Discover our "Jamaica Carnival 2025: Welcome to Jamrock" group travel adventure. Jamaica Carnival began in the 1940s with the opening of the University of the West Indies, where students from the Eastern Caribbean recreated the Carnival festivities on campus. In 1989, late Jamaican music pioneer Byron Lee and a small band of believers conceptualized a plan to bring Trinidad & Tobago's annual Carnival event to Jamaica. The first Jamaica Carnival took place on April 22, 1990, and has since evolved into one of the biggest annual events in Jamaica, featuring a week of activities from April 14-22. Carnival is a relatively new event in Jamaica, but it has become popular and features a huge parade through Kingston annually. The event follows similar lines to traditional Caribbean Carnivals, with big parties or "fetes" culminating in a day of Soca-driven revelry through the streets of Kingston.
